January 30, 2012 through February 3, 2012 the students’ homework will be 60 minutes of reading and completing their science projects which are due February 3, 2012. The science project is not an option, the students need to have one completed, but attending the Science Fair on February 7th is optional.
In class we learned that 20 drops of water equal 1 milliliter (mL) and that 1,000 milliliters equals 1 liter (L). Why is this important to know? Everywhere else in the world uses this form of metric measurement, even scientists. When we look at the bottles we buy at the store we can find these two forms of measurement on them.
In January we had four people pass to the next level in Rocket Math. Two passed their addition Rocket Math and two passed their subtraction Rocket Math. Keep up the good work!!
Fun with Milliliters and Liters »« Water Resistance-St. Basil’s Cathedrals step 1
We had the privilege of having Mrs. Palanio come into our class today and teach us about water-resistant art. We learned that crayon wax and water colors don’t like each other and so create a really cool look when put together. Today we did the first step which was to create our picture. The class looked at a picture of St. Basil’s Cathedral and semi-replicated it onto their paper. They were encouraged to make their picture their own by adding or taking away from the original picture. The students did some wonderful building designs!!
This week in science we focused on the various properties of sound. To hear the different properties the students did an activity using a drop chamber. The students worked in pairs and listened for the properties found in a washer, clothespin, plastic cup, chip, cardboard, plastic spoon, tin foil and craft stick. For instance did the object have a loud sound, low sound, go clank, clunk, ping, thump, clatter, ching, etc. Using these properties the students were able to distinguish between the various objects when dropped on the desk, even if they could not see the objects. While working in pairs the students used drop chambers to see if they could figure out the objects dropped by another team.
Water Resistance-St. Basil’s Cathedrals step 1 »« Fruit Salad Time
On Tuesday the Food Sense people came in and showed the students how to chop up fruit and make a fruit salad. The students had a blast and the salad was yummy!!!
This week we started learning how to regroup when doing subtraction. The students were able to use the ones, tens and hundreds blocks to help gain a firm understanding of the concept.
Students had the opportunity to color some neat holiday ornaments.
Subtraction Regrouping with Blocks »« Multiplication Combinations
The students were given multiplication problems and had to show what they meant using blocks.
Holiday Fun!!! »« Snowflake fun with our 5th Grade Reading Buddies
Mr. Farrell’s class came over on Wednesday and helped us create some really cool three-dimensional snowflakes.
